The Quest for Meaning Through Gear
Years ago, as a University of Colorado undergraduate with dual degrees in math and physics, I grappled with existential uncertainty. My refuge? Solo trips across the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Setting foot on the weathered stone, the smell of pine trees gave me serenity; the gusting winds and snowy peaks above the tree line gave me a flutter in my stomach.
A revelation came during a midnight tent repair session: While repairing my tent that had been damaged in a thunderstorm, I spent three hours working without realizing it, and felt no fatigue. Methodically refining equipment didn’t just fix gear – it mended my spirit.
I never looked back from that moment. I gradually picked up real-world CAD skills and practical knowledge. Now, as ExploreGears chief designer, I spend slightly more time in my design studio and a little less time on the trails.
